Road Signs in Spain

IMG_6580

The car rental alone was a lesson as well as a slightly stressful situation, but it was nothing compared to actually driving. We were on our 4-hour road trip with no prior experience driving in Spain. One of the first “road bumps” we came across was the traffic signs. The road signs in Spain are not the same as we are accustomed to. Though we researched the meanings of must road sign as we went, it was comical to brainstorm what we thought these signs were stating. Here are some examples. See if you can guess them correctly.

Somewhat graphic sign for bathrooms?

park sign

Nope, that’s a sign for a rest stop.

Be cautious of horseback riders, tractors, cyclists, and more?

Nope, that means those ways of transportation are not allowed on the highway.

No, cars allowed?

sign 4

Nope. Both of these signs mean you are entering a no passing zone.

Radiation Ahead

sign 2

Sort of, but actually it’s speed detection ahead so slow down.

Jellyfish Maybe

Our first response to this sign was pure confusion.

sign 3

While some may see a warning to watch for jellyfish, this actually is a reminder to check your lights before and after a tunnel.

What’s Your Sign?

Looking back, we should have researched Spain’s road signs and driving customs before the trip rather than figuring it out as we traveled. Thankfully, we had a successful and safe trip with several laughs along the way.

Have you experienced funny or strange road signs? If so, we would love to hear about them! Leave a comment below to share your road sign experience.

  1. Well done, that was fun. Don’t have any signs, but it does remind me of a song from the 70’s called Signs:

And the sign said “Long-haired freaky people need not apply”
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said “You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you’ll do”
So I took off my hat, I said “Imagine that. Huh! Me workin’ for you!”
    Whoa-oh-oh
    Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind
Do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the sign?
